The most striking building of the Burg is the City Hall.

Started in the 13th century, it is the oldest Gothic City Hall of Flanders. It served as an example for the City Halls of Brussels and Leuven.

The gothic elements are prominent, perhaps most in the pronounced verticalism. Built shortly before the beginning of the Burgundian period, it reflects the power of a wealthy city.
